How do I get more members?

Before I answer the question, ask yourself, "do I really want more members?" If you have a good active member base does it give you what you need? With more members comes the need for more vigilance against spammers, becoming a referee between arguing members, more lurkers, and more bouncing members.

If the answer is still a resounding, yes! Then here are some steps you can take.

  1. Advertise in listing groups. These groups specialize in sharing groups. There are hundreds of them. You can find some of them in the Group-Listing Groups section of this web site.
  2. Advertise on group web sites like this one. There are quite a few others. You can find a list of these at the link labeled, Group List Web Sites.
  3. Join other groups with similar membership, share pics, stories and the like with the other groups, and mention your own group.
  4. Invite members from other groups to join yours. As a moderator you can take advantage of this Yahoo! tool.
  5. It is not recommended that you spam other groups. While you will get more members, you risk the scorn of other moderators and risk Yahoo booting you.

How do I change my category?

Your category is based on the category you selected on Yahoo! when you created the group. I only have room in the database for one category. This value is updated each time your group stats are updated. You may be able to change this value.

    To Change Your Category
  1. From the group home page click on the management link
  2. Then click on "Description and Appearance"
  3. Finally, click on "Edit" Category and select your new category.

How did you find my group?

Your group was listed somewhere. It might be another group, a search engine, another email message, or you recreated a deleted group. I look for groups everywhere.

How did my group get on the spam list?

How did my group get on the dead/abandoned list?

Can I get off the spam or dead/abandoned list?

Yes, send me an email.

I emailed you and never got an answer?

I get alot of spam and alot of virus laden emails. Make sure your subject line is meaningful. I answer all emails I know that are uniquely sent.

What are the Voting Guidelines?

Votes are tallied and posted overnight. In order for the vote to count, the overall value (the number) must be filled in.

Each user (read that as IP address) gets only one vote (the most recent one). The reason is that a great group today may be dead in six months. A user can flip his vote from a 5 to a 1. It also keeps a moderator from giving himself 365 5 star votes (its attempted all the time). More frequent voting does keep the group on the recent votes list.

Votes are disqualified if someone tries to put in anything that even looks like a url or html in the comments field (there's been some abuse). Certain IP addresses (about a handful) are disqualified for abusing the comments.

No group gets preferential treatment. It's as legit as I can make it.

Voting for the year started at 0000 Jan 1 and ends at 2400 Dec 31.

Scores determine ranking, number of votes break ties

The stars on the regular group listings stay quite awhile. I trim the database by hand every once in a while.
